Day 1
Mariehamn
You travel in the morning by cruise ferry to Åland from Stockholm or GrisslehamnThe trip takes 3-6 hours, and on board you can enjoy the sea view and a delicious sea breakfast or brunch.
When you arrive in the port city Mariehamn you pick up your bikes on the other side of the ferry terminal. Overnight stay at Strandnas Hotels, on a quiet street in northern Mariehamn. We recommend a visit to The sea quarter in the Eastern Port, as well as strolling in the city center.
Day 2: 20km
Mariehamn to Grelsby
Breakfast at the hotel. Before leaving the city, a visit to Åland Maritime Museum and the large four-masted sailing ship Pomerania which is docked next to it.
From Mariehamn you cycle north along forests, fields and through villages to Godby and then a short distance further to Hotel Grelsby StrandYou can take a small detour via Önningeby Museum to see traditional Åland paintings, as well as via Jomala Church, which is one of Finland's oldest.
Day 3: 40km
Kastelholm, Bomarsund, Vårdö
After breakfast you jump into the saddles and cycle a short distance. Kastelholm CastleThis castle has been an important part of Åland's history since the Middle Ages and has in recent years been restored and has become a central tourist attraction. There are several museums nearby.
A short bike ride from the castle are the ruins of Bomarsund Fortress. This fort was built on the orders of the Tsar when Åland was part of Russia and was intended for thousands of soldiers, but the construction was not completed before it was attacked and destroyed by British and French forces.
After Bomarsund you cycle east towards Vårdö. Here you can take an extra trip along one of Åland's finest cycle routes up to Simskäla. You will later take the evening ferry to Kumlinge, where you spend the night in seaside cottages on Kumlinge Cottages. Breakfast and bed linen are included.
Day 4: 20km
Kumlinge & Kökar
Breakfast at Kumlinge Stugor. Then you cycle to Snäckö to take the morning ferry in southern Kumlinge. You continue by ferry through the Åland archipelago, via A mess to Kokar and can enjoy the view on the deck with a cup of coffee and something delicious from the café.
In the outermost archipelago you arrive at Kokar, an island with many fine places to visit, such as the medieval stone church in Hamno and the hiking trail Kalen. Kökar is small and nice to cycle through. In the harbour village Karlby Are you checking in? Brudhäll Hotel.
Day 5: 35km
Southern Åland
You have the morning to continue exploring Kökar and perhaps also time for lunch before taking the archipelago ferry back to mainland Åland. There you cycle along the main road from Langnas back to Mariehamn. On the way you pass Lemström's Canal, which was built by Russian prisoners during the Tsarist era. The bridge over the canal sometimes opens to let sailing boats pass. If you get there early, you'll have time to Önningeby Museum to look at beautiful paintings.
If you want to cycle a little extra, you can go ashore in Överö and cycle through BirdIn Degerby you can have lunch at Restaurant Seagram while you wait for the next ferry.
In Mariehamn you will stay overnight at Strandnas Hotels and have the evening to visit you The sea quarter and try the city's restaurants – or get a good rest.
Day 6: 24km
Jarso
After breakfast at the hotel, you cycle through Mariehamn and south to Jarso. This is one of the most beautiful roads in Åland. The journey goes over embankments with the sea on both sides to Nåtö and on to Järsö. There you can have a cup of coffee at The Stickstugans café before you return to Mariehamn and return the bicycles.
If you don't want to cycle anymore, you can instead visit museums and attractions in Mariehamn – or have a quiet day on the beach with ice cream and try an Åland pancake!
In the afternoon you will depart from Åland by cruise ship and arrive in port that evening. On board you can rest after your cycling and make up for lost kilos at the sandwich board.
